Mom and Small Business Owner
Today, I'm fortunate to have health coverage for my young family and, as a successful business owner, offer health insurance to all my employees. This wasn't always the case. Years ago, as I was trying to get my small business off the ground, I became pregnant with my first amazing child. I didn't have insurance, nor could I get it even if I wanted to pay for it because pregnancy was considered a pre-existing condition. Thankfully, I found a state program CHIP in Texas that granted access to the vital prenatal care I needed. Now, the Affordable Care Act has a provision that prevents insurance companies from denying coverage for pre-existing conditions, including pregnancy. This protection is vital for new mothers, like me, who should never have to face the fear of not getting the care they need when it matters most
Dad with Better Coverage for Less
Although my family is relatively well-to-do and has always had so-called top-of-the-line healthcare coverage, for the first time in my life, I was able to easily compare healthcare options. And I was able to make those comparisons with clear visibility on what is truly covered and at what minimum and maximum cost – before making any financial commitment. Now, my family is covered by the same preferred healthcare provider as before; but with superior coverage and lower cost.
Self Employed
I am a self employed graphic artist who had not been insured for over 10 years. The price of insurance on the individual market kept going up while the quality of insurance went down. Thanks to the ACA, my husband and I now have quality health insurance for $58 a month. We are ecstatic! Having coverage is an absolute blessing.
No Longer Ruled Out
A lot of health insurance programs ruled me out because I have pre-existing conditions—multiple sclerosis, endometriosis, and early onset arthritis. The monthly infusion for my MS costs $5,000, and when I don't do it, my brain lesions return. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, I now have coverage that costs $300 instead of $1,200 a month and I’m getting the care I need!
